Writer's Block: Church and State

  • Jan. 4th, 2009 at 8:30 PM

Today in 1893 U.S. President Benjamin Harrison declared full amnesty for Mormon polygamists. Is it the government's place to define which marriages are valid and which are not?

Well yeah, The government dictates the legal aspect of marriage, therefore it should define it. But what influences the government' definition? That's the true issue.

As it stands, the government has defined marriage all wrong. If all in the United States are to have the right to happiness, part of that happiness comes from being able to enjoy a life with another and to enjoy the rights given to other unions. The 'sanctity' of others' marriages won't be breached; chaos won't ensue.

But, this is a society gripped in fear and paranoia, so any big changes to a long standing legal institution such as marriage won't take place in the near future. Maybe within my lifetime, but that would be too much to hope for.
